Post-Partum Self Care. Because you need it.
The first 4 week of post-partum can be filled with a range of emotions, and often there are a ton of challenges you face. Not only are you trying to keep a new little human alive, but you’re body is also healing itself from something pretty intense.
So let’s focus on you for a moment mama. Here is my top 10 postpartum selfcare list. And this may slightly overlap with my Postpartum healing journey post. But that’s how good those items are
1. Comfortable Bras (For nursing or otherwise)
Comfort is the name of the game here. And while you’re in the beginning stages of breastfeeding or pumping. The bra you choose to wear will be a large determining factor in dictating your comfort level.
These two options were my most worn.
2. Maternity Pads and Postpartum Underwear
Like I said before comfort and feeling secure is key. Right after giving birth, you’ll need pads and disposable underwear for at least the first few days if not week. The brand I used as I have found with most of my mama friends were the Frida mom Postpartum Disposable Underwear. After you’re little more healed I found a heavy-duty pad and some high waisted briefs were the most comfortable. I bought these ones from Amazon and I loved the high rise which felt like everything was being kept in.
3. Nipple Cream
Your nipples are going to hurt. Let’s just get that out of the way. However, there are somethings to combat that and have as much comfort as you can. I personally swore by the Earth Mama Nipple Butter. I loved that it was organic and had all natural ingredients, and most importantly that it worked!
4. Perineal Spray or Foam
If you gave birth vaginally, you’re going to need this. If you’ve read about postpartum care before you’ve probably already about why so I’ll save it. But my holy grail and probably reason why I think my postpartum pain was not horrible was because of Dermaplast.
5. Postpartum Supplements
After giving brith, your whole self is going through a lot of recovery and part of that recovery and re-balancing includes vitamins and nutrients. Because I was breastfeeding exclusively I also found it important to pack my baby's food source (aka me) with all the nutrients she would need. Because I used the Megafood Prenatal vitamins, I then used their Postnatal vitamins.
6. Belly Band or Postpartum Wrap
As mentioned multiple times by now, support physically is really needed for your body postpartum and helps with the healing process. One of those healing processes you probably don’t hear enough about is your inner core. A belly band or wrap helps support and secure your core as the muscles are also healing back together. This is the one I used and it was a life saver in the early days before being cleared to start physical activity.
7. Breast Pump
Finding the breast pump that is right for you is like finding another support partner in this postpartum journey. I encourage every mama to be to do their own research, read reviews, watch videos and find what is important to you. For me it was flexibility to be able to be on the move with my pumps. And after much research, I found the Momcozy S12 Pros to be my best friends.
8. Hydration and Nutrition Essentials
Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your body, but at least what I found is it can also be challenging if not properly equipped. One, my husband was a huge support in always ensuring I had my water filled. Two I got multiple water bottles to keep throughout the house. Three I mixed up my hydration between water, Body Armour Lites, and a combo of liquid IV to keep me going throughout the day.
9. Sleep
You need to sleep. Period. If you have not slept at least 5 hours you need to sleep when your baby is asleep. Other things can wait. I know there isn’t a product or tangible item. But know this, lack of sleep postpartum can lead to increased risk of postpartum mental health issues. So please prioritize your sleep as much as your little ones.
10. Alone Time
It may seem impossible but you need time for yourself. You are still a person who has interests and hobbies and it’s important not to forget that. Even if its just going outside for 5 min by yourself. Having that brief moment to reset, will do wonders for you, your recovering body and the bond with your baby.
